Reception and Year 1 – Welsh Stream

We are very excited in Dosbarth Irfon to share our new topic, which is all about food. We started by discussing what we already know about food and what we would like to learn about food.

We had a wonderful start to our topic last Friday when we were introduced to a fantastic new Julia Donaldson book, ‘Mam – gu Gryffalo’ (The Gruffalo’s Grandma.) The children concentrated brilliantly and could not take their eyes off the screen. The story is about Grandma visiting family members and the different foods she prepares for them. The children are now eager to create some of these foods in the mud kitchen. We are looking forward to it!

The story also involves creating stories, which helps reinforce the skills of writing, listening and storytelling which we have recently been developing in our ‘Stiwdio Stori’ area. We also created pictures of The Gruffalo in the style of the illustrator Axel Scheffler. The children produced wonderful work.

The story also gave us the opportunity to discuss families, including what Mum and Dad like to eat, what Grandma eats. It will give us the opportunity to go further back and discuss what Grandma’s grandmother used to eat in the past too. We have already been discussing ideas for our Amser Enfys activities (activities that the children think of themselves and develop within the different learning areas).

Our focus in language lessons is developing the skill of instructions and stories. We will continue to develop maths through the scheme Summit Maths. Currently we are developing the skill of number. For example, we would use ‘food’ as a stimulus to count forwards and backwards, recognise and name numbers, add and subtract 1, count sets and create sets, order numbers, and form numbers.
